TerreStar and AT&T have announced plans to offer TerreStar Genus, an integrated smartphone mobility solution that will combine primary cellular wireless connectivity with the ability to connect to a satellite network as a backup.

With the TerreStar Genus, users can connect to a satellite network when the cellular one isn’t available, this way benefiting from a wider coverage area. The TerreStar Genus smartphone features: a 2.6 inch touchscreen display, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, GPS, satellite voice and data capabilities, Windows Mobile, GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA connectivity and Bluetooth.
AT&T and TerreStar will show the integrated cellular/satellite solution at the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) annual conference from October 3 – 7, 2009 in Denver, Colorado, booth number 258.
Starting the first quarter of 2010, the TerreStar Genus smartphone will be available to AT&T enterprise, government and small business customers. Customers will be required to subscribe to appropriate AT&T cellular wireless voice and data plans and a monthly satellite network access feature. Additional voice and data roaming charges will apply when using the satellite network.
